Riding with Varsity Go
Where does Varsity Go work?
Around Maseno University: Main Campus, Siriba, the hostels and the town, plus the roads out to Luanda, Ekwanda, Holo, Kombewa, Chulaimbo and towards Kisumu. The app shows the service area on the map. If you pick a place outside it, the app tells you before you book.
How is the price worked out?
The fare is set by distance along the actual road route, with a base amount and a minimum fare. Some popular routes have a fixed price. A small Varsity Go fee is added on top, and the app shows the fare, the fee and the total before you book.
The price you see is the price you pay. There is no haggling and nothing is added at the end of the ride.
When do I pay?
When a rider accepts your request, an M-Pesa prompt appears on your phone. Enter your PIN and the rider sets off to pick you up. Nothing is charged before a rider accepts. If you have money in your Varsity Go wallet, it is used first.
What if no rider is available?
We send your request to the nearest available riders, one at a time, and widen the search if nobody nearby accepts. If no one can take the trip, the request is cancelled and you are not charged.
Can I cancel?
Yes. Cancelling is free until your rider is close to the pickup. After that, a small cancellation fee goes to the rider for their time, and the app always shows the exact amount before you confirm. Any money not used is refunded.
How do refunds work?
Refunds go to your Varsity Go wallet straight away by default, ready for your next ride. If you prefer M-Pesa, choose it in the app and the refund is sent to your M-Pesa number with the next daily payout run, after our finance team checks it.
Safety
Who are the riders?
Every rider is checked by our team before their first trip. We check their national ID, a motorcycle driving licence, a live selfie matched against the ID, and their bike and number plate. Passengers rate every trip, and riders with problems are paused while we look into it.
What is the trip PIN?
Each trip has a 4-digit PIN shown only in your app. The rider has to enter it to start the trip. That way you know you are getting on the right bike and the rider knows they have the right passenger.
What does the SOS button do?
Pressing SOS during a trip alerts our safety team straight away with your live location and trip details, and texts your trusted contacts a link to follow the trip. You get three seconds to cancel an accidental tap. The app also has a one-tap button to call 999.
Can someone follow my trip?
Yes. Share your trip from the app and anyone with the link can see the bike’s position, the rider’s name and plate, and your destination until shortly after you arrive. They don’t need the app.
Riders
How much do riders earn?
Riders keep 100% of every fare. The Varsity Go fee is paid by the passenger on top of the fare, so nothing comes out of the rider’s earnings. Riders also get a cancellation fee when a passenger cancels late.
When are riders paid?
Once a day, to their own M-Pesa number. Every trip is paid by M-Pesa before the rider sets off, so riders never chase a fare. Daily payouts go out after our finance team approves the batch.
What do I need to become a rider?
A national ID, a valid driving licence that covers motorcycles, your own motorcycle with a readable number plate, an Android smartphone and an M-Pesa line in your name. You apply in the Varsity Go Rider app and our team reviews your documents, usually within a day.
Your account
Do I need a password?
No. You sign in with your phone number and a one-time code sent by SMS.
How do I delete my account?
Open Settings in the app and tap Delete account. If you have money in your wallet, it is refunded to your M-Pesa first. We keep trip and payment records that the law requires us to keep, without your name on them. The Privacy Policy explains what we keep and for how long.
